Digital Journalist, Presenter & Communications trainer Sophie Mei Lan is an experienced, Film-Maker, Content Creator, and Community Media expert, specialising in Social Affairs, Mental Health & well-being, Northern Communities, Documentaries and Investigations.
Sophie started out in journalism running her own documentary-making company after qualifying with a post-graduate diploma in Broadcast Journalism (NCTJ ACCREDITED).
During this period she worked for Channel 4 News, ITV News and BBC, alongside establishing herself as a multimedia journalist for local and national newspapers.
Sophie has won a number of awards for her investigative journalism work combined with her ability to tell stories across platforms.
She has worked in all areas of production: researching, investigating, producing and presenting original stories.
As an experienced content creator, Sophie also has insight into how to share stories to capture a digital audience.
She is born and bred in Yorkshire with strong community contacts across the north of England.
Sophie is of dual heritage (English and Chinese), lives in an area of significant deprivation in Wakefield, West Yorkshire in part social housing and is originally from Sheffield, South Yorkshire. She lives with invisible disabilities and was brought up in two very diverse homes. While initially, her background was a barrier to getting into the industry, now it is part of her strength which enables her to find unique stories from a range of marginalised communities (who she calls ‘experts by lived experience’).
